I was a colleague of John with the U.S. Geological Survey from 1965 until I attended his retirement party, approximately in 1990 (I am not sure of the date). John and I shared a well-developed sense of humor. Example: When working in Venezuela he ordered the breakfast cereal called Grapenuts, finding that he would have to pronounce it in Spanish as Gra-pee-noots. Whenever we met, for decades, I would remind him of this and we would both have a laugh.
John was a wonderful gentleman, and I treasure his friendship.
