John Edward Montagne's Obituary
John Edward Montagne, 96, resident of Gainesville, died Saturday, April 2, 2016 at his home, following a long illness.
Mr. Montagne was born on September 10, 1919 in Sioux City, Iowa, to the late Roy and Althea Younglove Montagne. As a young man, he joined the Naval Reserve, and later the U. S. Marine Corps. As a Marine during World War II, Mr. Montagne served as a fighter pilot, commander of an air squadron serving in the South Pacific, and ultimately ending up in Japan. He remained in the Marine Corps for several years after the war, settling in Seattle, Washington where he began a long career with Boeing. He moved his family to Melbourne, Florida, working for Boeing at Cape Canaveral. After his retirement, he and his wife traveled, until settling in Gainesville, in 2006. Mr. Montagne enjoyed volunteering, working with the St. Vincent de Paul Society and attending St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Neila Montagne; a daughter, Lee Ann Montagne; two sons, Michael and Patrick (Vickie) Montagne; two granddaughters, Fiona Montagne and Melissa Bollin.
Graveside services with military honors will be held on Saturday, April 9, 2016 at 11:00 A. M., in the Countryside Cemetery.
