John arrived at Shands at a crucial time in the relatively young history of the institution. His philosophy and personal manner, coupled with a real vision for present and future, enabled him to 'captain' the challenging transition from a state to a not-for-profit structure. That event and his role in it should never be forgotten. On it hangs each and every achievement of Shands at the University of Florida. And it was accomplished during and after perhaps the most grievous personal event of his life.

John Ives lives on in his family and in all of us. He was a wonderful mentor to me early in my career. Having worked in four academic medical centers, and a hospital alliance I have always reflected on John's compassion based on his personal life experiences. My father and I always smiled when we remembered John asking my Dad, "how does it feel to be known your daughter's father, versus her being known as your daughter. To Ann and the family, blessings.
