John Alvin Hubner's Obituary
John Alvin Hubner passed in his sleep April 3, 2026. Born June 12, 1932, in High Springs, Florida, John grew up swimming and camping around the local springs. After graduating from High Springs High School in 1950, where he was a multi-sport athlete, he served with the Airborne Early Warning Squadron, “Hurricane Hunters”, at Naval Air Station Jacksonville and in Puerto Rico. Following his service, he used the GI Bill to become the first in his family to graduate from college, earning a business administration degree from the University of Florida. He married Margaret Louise Richardson April 10, 1959.
John started a career in accounting with Radiation, Inc., which merged with Harris Corporation in 1967. His steady and conscientious nature led him to progress through the ranks of Harris, eventually retiring as Vice-President/Controller. Despite the demands of frequent travel, he made it a point to be home every weekend to support his sons at their swim meets and ballgames.
When he retired in 1992, John and Margaret moved to Gainesville where John spent his time working out, frequenting Gator sporting events, and enjoying family.
He was never in a hurry when there was a story to tell. John loved trading anecdotes with family and friends, including his boyhood neighbor, college roommate, and brother-in-law, Oliver “Cobb” Johnson. He shared that same love of storytelling with his grandchildren. As toddlers, he would carry them from room to room, pausing to patiently describe pictures and household objects.
He will be dearly missed by his wife, Margaret; his sons, John Bryant (Kim Michelle) and James Paul (Brook Ann); his four grandchildren, Jack Lansing, James Bryant, Elizabeth Grace, and Joshua Bryant; and extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, John Frederick Hubner and Grace Bryant Hubner.
All friends are invited to join with the family to celebrate John’s life on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, between 3:00 and 5:00 P. M. at the Williams-Thomas Funeral Home Westarea, 823 NW 143rd Street, Newberry. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to a charity of choice.
