John H. Herbert Jr's Obituary
John H. Herbert, Jr. died Friday, June 30, 2022, at the age of 96. Born in Jacksonville, Florida. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a Soil Technologist with United States Sugar Corp in Clewiston, FL. John moved to Gainesville in 1954 with his wife, Mary, and one son. He retired as Associate Professor Emeritus with UF IFAS in 1981.
John was a charter member of the Gainesville Sail and Power Squadron, a Past Squadron Commander, and a Life Member of the United States Power Squadrons.
John was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Gainesville. Survivors include son and daughter-in-law John Robert and Barbara Hanson Herbert, son Phillip William Herbert, two grandchildren (Sandra Decker and Michael Herbert), and two great- grandchildren (Jordan and Cameron Decker).
A Celebration of John’s life will be held on Thursday, July 7, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. at Williams-Thomas Downtown Chapel 404 N. Main Street Gainesville, Florida
For those attending the service, please come dressed comfortably – as though you were going to hop in a boat and go fishing with John .
