John Hamilton Truitt, Jr.'s Obituary
John Hamilton Truitt, Jr. 78 of Gainesville, FL died at Select Specialty Hospital in Gainesville, FL December 9, 2022. Born in Easton, Maryland, the son of John Hamilton Pruitt and Barbara Spencer Truitt. He was the oldest son of two.
John grew up in Easton, MD and graduated from Easton High School Class of 1962. He married Linda Sue Viggiano of Seaford, MD in 1967
He received a Medical Technology certificate and Bachelor of Science degree from Salisbury State College, Salisbury, MD and Master of Healthcare Management, 1965-1972 from the University of Jacksonville, FL. He enlisted in Maryland National Guard for eight years and was soldier of the year.
He was in charge of the blood bank of Easton Hospital Maryland and also worked at Dorchester General Hospital, Cambridge, MD. He developed a strong program with John’s Hopkins Blood Bank in Baltimore, MD supplying both sides of the Chesapeake Bay with needed blood types. He was a member of the Central Florida Laboratory Managers Association. He was manager of the lab in Arcadia, FL at G. Pierce Wood Memorial Hospital for two years when he first moved to Florida. He was manager of Lab and EKG Department at West Pasco Hospital, New Port Richey, FL, Coastal Communities Hospital, HCA, Bunnell, FL and Shands Hospital Labs, and Alachua General Hospital, Gainesville, FL. He received the DrFirst award in 1983 and was humanitarian award winner of the year for his idea of developing an easier procedure of drawing multiple samples from patients. He donated many gallons of his B-Rh negative blood over his career.
He was a former Treasurer of the Masonic Lodge and Shrine Temple, Palm Coast Scout Master of Boy Scouts of America and a Reserve Police officer in Bunnell, FL.
He is survived by his wife Linda, son, John Joseph and three children, Evelyn, Clara, Sawyer and wife Emily Johnson of Puyallup, WA; brother, Spencer Truitt and wife Stacey of Preston, MD; nephew, Sean and wife Kaytlin of Preston, MD.
John retired in 2011.
