Ada and I share so many wonderful memories of our friendship with John and Susan. We started in the early 70s, competing in the local sailing club on small production sailboats, graduated to identical IOR half tonners, then J24s and ended up with our two cruising sailboats.
John and Susan took early retirement, cruising in the Caribbean and we joined them for two summer cruises. It was this that prompted us to follow in his footsteps and when we took off a few years later, for the crusing lifestyle, they joined us in Central America.
John was my CCA sponsor. He was always the epitome of the Southern gentleman and we will miss him dearly.

Jack and I just read of John’s passing today and feel a deep loss for a wonderful partner and friend. Although we lost touch over the years, Jack has so many wonderful memories of Attkisson Bankston Inc. and our friendship with the Bankston family. John was a sailor, Jack was a fisherman but they bonded to create their business, both loving the construction industry. We send our thoughts and love to the family.

I'll always think of John on the sailboat, and playing cards for chocolate milk, while he patiently endured my late-night, teenage, political debates. I just love the Bankston family, every single precious one of them, and this sad news is unwelcome, for sure, but I'm also glad his suffering has ended. Love to you all, Mary Greene

I want to write a few sentences about Uncle John. I really got to know him and Aunt Susan during the week they hosted Sarah and I on their sailboat “Whisper” in the Bahamas just after I graduated medical school. The hospitality, generosity and friendship they shared with us made that week one of the best vacations we’ve ever had. We were young and poor and in awe of their sailboat life. We visited remote beaches, ate fresh fish and conch, enjoyed afternoon drinks, fed sugar to bananaquit birds right out of our hands and went snorkeling every day. Truly a magical week that I will always be grateful for. I think of Uncle John as a man full of wisdom and who knew to make every day count. I very much appreciate the life insights he shared with me on that trip and over the years. My heartfelt condolences go out to the extended family, who also have been welcoming and wonderful to be with over the years. Wish we could all be together. Hugs from the Bluegrass, John D'Orazio
