John Allen Applewhite's Obituary
John Allen Applewhite, 60, of Gainesville passed away comfortably Tuesday, August 30, 2016, at his home with his loving family by his side. He was born on September 4, 1955, in Albemarle, North Carolina to William Parnell and Adella Jane Farmer Applewhite. John received his master’s degree from the University of Florida in 1988. He retired as a chemist from St. John’s River Water Management District in August, 2015. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved hiking daily with his Dalmatians, and boating, camping, and fishing regularly with his family. He was known for his rapier wit, zealous appetite for knowledge, and pleasant fun-loving personality. He was a beloved friend to many and will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his wife of 34 years, LeeAnn Dixon Applewhite of Gainesville; his children, William Lee Applewhite and Ashley Marie Applewhite, both of Gainesville, and a sister, Ellen Patricia Applewhite Deese (Tommy).
A private Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, those who wish are encouraged to make memorials to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or a charity of their choice.
