After being raised in a farming community, her family moved to Gainesville and purchased
The Thomas Tourist Home on East University Ave. JoAnn and Jackie Lee Thompson were
married June 7, 1959. They lived at the Tourist Home while she and Jack were building their
own home and expecting their first child. They were married for 64 years.
JoAnn worked at Edward’s Building Supply in bookkeeping and became a fixture of the
company through its several transitions. She then moved to a position in bookkeeping at
the University of Florida where she held several different positions until her retirement.
JoAnn loved travelling and camping, especially at Salt Springs, where she had spent much
of her youth. Jack and JoAnn traveled much of the time with her sisters and niece, Pam
Stuebe Poe, and Jack’s brother and his wife, Kenny and Marie Thompson. They traveled in
travel trailers, motor homes, trains, planes and automobiles. They went on cruises and
traveled through countless states and countries in their adventures. But the beach held
JoAnn’s heart and was always JoAnn’s favorite place!
JoAnn was known for her kindness and loving ways, her gentle spirit, and her flexibility in
putting up with her industrious husband and children, as they started projects in all areas
of the house including the living room.
Joann loved family. Whether it was going on adventures, playing cards, or just talking. She
loved going to family reunions, where she was known for her famous chocolate pie.
Friends and family alike were always welcome in her home.
