Dear Joan Mendenhall Family,
May you find comfort in your wonderful memories of her. As the First Lady of the UF Department of Statistics for most of my graduate school years, she modeled hospitality, compassion, generosity, and an encouraging spirit. I always enjoyed interacting with her. I also have fond memories of my limited interactions with her two sons.

My wife and I offer our condolences to the family of Joan Mendenhall on this sad occasion. We have known the Mendenhall family since I was a student at Bucknell University in the 1960’s. That was followed by my joining Bill Mendenhall on the statistics faculty at UF a few years later. In those days, we greatly appreciated Joan’s kind, considerate, graceful, and positive friendship that helped a young married couple adapt to a new life far from home. In fact, we grew to appreciate that same kindness, caring and gentleness for about 50 years!
