Dr. Jerry Lloly Weinberg's Obituary
Dr. Jerry Lloyd Weinberg, PhD, age 86 of Atlanta, Georgia, passed away Tuesday, November 27, 2018. He was born December 2, 1931, in Detroit, Michigan.
Dr. Weinberg was a Research Professor in Astronomy and Space Science at the University of Florida and Director of its Space Astronomy Laboratory, a research center which he founded and moved to Gainesville from the State University of New York at Albany in 1980 to develop the first major space science program in the State of Florida.
Dr. Weinberg has directed laboratory, ground, and space science projects and technology development with groups in Europe, Asia, Australia, India, and the U.S. He has published 160 papers in professional journals and books, primarily in the areas of photoelectric photometry and polarimetry, atmospheric optics and radiation, physics of the interplanetary medium with emphasis on cosmic dust, measurement and analysis of orbital debris, and ground, laboratory, and space instrumentation.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Marcia Weinberg; two sons, Mark and Scott; and three grandchildren, Cameron, Kate and Lucy. A Celebration of Life was held Friday, November 30, 2018, in the chapel of Williams-Thomas Funeral Home Downtown.
