Jean & Joe Subers' Obituary
Jean and Joe Subers met at the University of Florida in 1956 and they were married on July 13, 1957. So began a remarkable marriage and a love affair that not only lasted, but grew for 59 years.
After enduring great physical pain for several years, Jean lost the strength to keep on living...And, Joe, watching his beloved Jean suffer, was unable to imagine life without her; so they both chose to end their lives together. They had both put their trust in Jesus for eternal life, and while we miss them terribly, we are confident that Jesus welcomed them both to heaven, and that mom is now pain free!
Jean was born in Miami, Florida. She attended Coral Gables High School and then the University of Florida where she met Joe and earned her teaching degree. Joe was born in Orlando, Florida, and he attended Jacksonville Bolles Academy and then the University of Florida. They settled in Miami, where Joe joined his father’s Independent Insurance Agency, Burritt, Subers and Worley. While in Miami, Joe served on the Orange Bowl Committee, President of the University Club, and as General Chairman of the Doral Eastern Open PGA Event. Joe was an avid golfer, and they were members of the Riviera Country Club. Jean was active in local civic organizations like Junior League and Beaux Arts. A talented artist herself, Jean was a painter and sculptor. They raised three sons, and sent them all through Westminster Christian School.
In 1982, they fulfilled a lifelong dream, and moved outside of Monticello, Florida and developed the Tally Hills Wildlife ranch. They raised cattle, along with Fallow and Axis deer for 22 years before retiring to Gainesville and the Oak Hammock community. In Gainesville, they were members at First Presbyterian Church, active in the Gainesville Country Club, the Gator Booster Scholarship Club, Gainesville Quarterback Club, and the Basketball Tip Off Club. They also served together with Meals on Wheels. Jean was an active volunteer for most of her life, and when she was healthy, she would often volunteer at her church, the Boys and Girls Club, and Shands Hospital. Jean’s talents as an artist were wonderful, and periodically put on display at Oak Hammock.
Joe and Jean are survived by their loving family; children, Jim and Janice Subers of Blue Springs, Missouri, John and Margaret Subers of Palm Coast, Florida, and Jay and Ginger Subers of Atlanta, Georgia; sisters, Betty Pope and Patsy Winter of Americus, Georgia; grandchildren, Joy Subers Meadows and her husband Chad, Jason and Trinity Subers, Tucker Subers, Tanner Subers, Jake Subers, Jon Subers, Chad Subers, Carter Subers, Fletcher Subers; great-grandchildren, William, Haven, Wes, Madelynn Grace, Alister, Aiden and one “on the way.”
A funeral service will be held Saturday, May 21, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 106 SW 3rd St, Gainesville, FL 32601, with Rev. Dr. Robert Shettler officiating. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that gifts be made to:
