James Lepton Lowry's Obituary
The family of James Lepton Lowry announces his passing on November 10, 2025 at the age of 94 in Gainesville, Florida.
James Lepton Lowry (Jim) was born in Mount Vernon, Illinois on February 14, 1931 to Lepton A. Lowry and Nina Faye Savage Lowry.
Jim graduated from Effingham High School in 1949 and enrolled at Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois, majoring in Business Administration. He was a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon social fraternity, holding several offices within the fraternity structure. Jim met Anita Perry, a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority in the fall of 1949. The two dated and were married in Effingham, Illinois, December 31, 1951. They graduated at the end of the summer term in 1953 and Jim joined the family business in Effingham.
The family moved to Gainesville, Florida in 1954 to open Lowry’s Fine Furniture. Jim became involved with many civic organizations, joining the Jaycees, University City Kiwanis Club, and later the Gainesville Rotary Club. Jim founded the UF Basket Ball Tip Off Club and served as its first Captain. He was the President of the Jaycees, President of the Gainesville Golf & Country Club, and Captain of the Gainesville Quarterback Cub. Jim was named Gainesville’s Outstanding Young Man in 1968.
Jim was preceded in death by his loving wife Anita Perry Lowry, parents Lepton and Nina Lowry, sisters Patricia Louise Goosen, and Barbara Jean Pulliam. He is survived by his brother Steve Lowry, daughters Lynne Lowry Wells (Peter), Suzanne Lowry Warner (Mark), grandchildren Lindsay Wells Bedell (Daniel), James Wells (Monika), Courtney Warner King (Christopher), Laura Warner, great grandchildren Emerson Bedell, Eleanor Bedell, Madeleine Wells, Christopher King and Cameron King.
The funeral will be held on Friday, December 5, 2025 at Williams-Thomas Westarea-823 N.W 143rd Street Newberry, FL at 11:00 am followed by a graveside service at Forest Meadows Cemetery-Central.
