James Patrick Heaney's Obituary
James Patrick “Papa” Heaney, a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully on August 24, 2024, at the age of 84. James was primarily known for his unwavering love for family, his kind heart, and his gentle spirit. He also had a prestigious and distinguished career in Environmental Engineering in various faculty and department head roles at the University of Florida and University of Colorado. He retired as Professor Emeritus at the University of Florida in 2018.
James (Papa) was the beloved husband of the late Diane Heaney, with whom he shared a 59-year loving marriage. He was the proud father of James Heaney (wife Yanim) and Karyn Austin. He was also a loving grandfather to Abby Austin, Zackary Heaney, and Brianna Heaney, who brought him immense joy and laughter. James is survived by a large extended family including his beloved sister, Maureen Finnegan, with whom he shared a close bond throughout his life. He was also an avid Gator fan and loved being active in things such as running, biking, golfing, skiing, and sailing.
James is remembered for his sense of integrity, dedication to family, and the many lives he touched with his wisdom, warmth, and kindness. His legacy will live on in the hearts of those who loved him. “Papa” will be deeply missed but never forgotten, as his spirit lives on in the love and memories created.
A memorial service and reception will be held on his behalf at Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Gainesville, Florida on September 12, 2024, beginning at 10AM.
