Irene "Renie" M. Koon's Obituary
Irene “Renie” M. Koon, age 86 of Hawthorne, passed away Wednesday, February 12, 2014 at her home. She was born November 28, 1927 in Cedar Key, Florida to Charles H. and Irene Augusta McCumber Coburn. At two years old she moved to Gainesville and grew up there. She and her father owned and operated “The Picknickers Delight” restaurant in the 1940s and 1950s on SE Hawthorne Road. She worked at the Hosery Mill on Waldo Road in the 1950s. She moved to Cow Pen Lake with her husband Don Koon in the early 1980s. A longtime member of Woodlawn Baptist Church, she enjoyed Bible study, church missions and outreach. She also enjoyed sewing and gardening in her free time.
She is survived by her daughter, Rita McPherson; grandson, Kenneth Smith, great grandson, Kenny Smith, Jr. and granddaughter, Megan Grace Walters.
A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, February 22, 2014 at 10:00 a.m., at Woodlawn Baptist Church, with Pastor Charles Litzell and Dr. L.D. Osteen officiating. In lieu of flowers, Ms. “Renie” requested that donations be made to SonLife Broadcasting Network, P.O. Box 262550, Baton Rouge, LA 70826 or go to www.jsm.org , to further the gospel of Jesus Christ around the world in her memory.
