Hortensia Quian Suarez
1923-2017
Hortensia Quian Suarez passed away peacefully after a short illness. Born in Ranchuelo, Cuba, she moved to Miami in 1960, and, finally, made her permanent home in Gainesville, Florida, in 1965.
Hortensia will be missed and lovingly remembered by her children, Teresita Suarez Delgado (Hector), of Titusville, Florida and Carlos Suarez-Quian (Kathryn Creel), of Bethesda, Maryland, and, her grandchildren, Nicholas and Alix Delgado, and Harrison and Benjamin Suarez. She was preceded in death by her husband, UF Professor Emeritus Andres Suarez.
Hortensia was proud of her educational achievements, earning a Ph.D in Chemistry from the University of Havana, Cuba. In Gainesville, she became a private Mathematics instructor. She ran a private tutoring business and was proud of her many students' brilliant accomplishments. Strong willed and fiercely independent, Hortensia lived alone, managing her affairs until her illness, at age 94. Hortensia loved sharing her many stories of frequent world travels and lifetime experiences. She often talked about her experiences while growing up in Cuba. Hortensia was known as a great conversationalist and raconteur. Those who knew her admired and respected her for her integrity, her intelligence, her charm, and, her elegant sense of style. She leaves behind a great legacy. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of St Francis.
