Herman Cleveland Luke's Obituary
Herman Cleveland Luke, 83, longtime resident of Gainesville, Florida, died Monday, September 10, 2018, in the North Florida Regional Medical Center, following a long illness.
Mr. Luke was born in Manatee, Florida on March 13, 1935, son of the late John Calvin and Lois Hall Luke, and grew up in Gainesville, and at 15 ran off to join the National Guard. He later joined the U. S. Navy, became a certified diver and welder, served in Korea and in the Vietnam era, and retired at the rank of Chief Petty Officer. After the Navy, he returned to Gainesville, and worked as a commercial welder. His real passion was in music, along with his wife, Maureen, he was a singer and rhythm guitarist for the Gospel-aires and then the New Life Singers. He was preceded in death by two sons, David Luke, Sr. and Gary Luke, and by his wife Maureen in July of this year.
He is survived by one son, Steven Luke, and step-daughter, Katherine both of Brockton, Mass; step-daughter, Sherry Lambert Noble of Wisconsin and step-son, Scott Lambert of Gainesville; brothers, John (Diane) Luke, of Gainesville, and Robert (late wife, Shirley) Luke, of Newberry; two sisters, Gloria Jean (John) Weaver of Bradenton, and Peggy Joe (Eugene) Bell, of Jacksonville; one grandson, David Luke, Jr.; one niece, Jennifer Luke Spencer; two nephews, Chris Luke and Steven Weaver.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, September 15, 2018, at 11:00 A. M., at the Countryside Baptist Church, 10926 NW 39th Avenue, Gainesville. Interment will follow in Countryside Cemetery. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the services, beginning at 10:00 A. M.
