Herbert Westcott's Obituary
Herbert R. Westcott, age 96 of St Augustine and formally of Gainesville, Fl, peacefully passed away on March 21, 2022, while in the compassionate care of Clyde E. Lassen State Veteran’s Nursing Home and Community Hospice.
Herbert was born in Jacksonville, Fl on November 1, 1925 to Bytha Boyett and James Music.
Herbert proudly served in the US Navy for 23 years, from 1942-1965 as Chief Petty Officer and Chief Gunner's Mate during WWII. After his retirement from the Navy, Herbert was employed by the City of Gainesville, working as a Water Plant Operator for the next 20 years, until his retirement in 1985.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Virginia Mae Westcott and his son, Richard H. Westcott, both of Gainesville, FL.
He is survived by his loving extended family. Annette Walko of St Augustine, who was like a daughter to him for many years and her two children, USAF Staff Sergeant Corey D. Walko of Okinawa, Japan (Inna, Alina and Ayla) and USAF 2nd Lieutenant Brittianie L. Walko of Jacksonville, FL.
Herbert was a man of strong faith. He was honored and proud of his years served in the US Navy and enjoyed recounting and sharing many stories of his adventures on the LSTs.
“Herbie” will undoubtedly be most remembered for his never ending heart of gold. A heart full of love, kindness, compassion and generosity for all who knew and loved him, especially his furry four legged friends. One of Herbert’s favorite quotes, “ All engines, full steam ahead,” seems fitting as he takes his final ride. Godspeed and until we meet again, Herbie.
A Graveside Service will be held on Monday, March 28, 2022, at 10 am at Forest Meadows Central Cemetery with military honors.
