Herbert G. Treweek's Obituary
Herbert G. Treweek passed away peacefully with his family at his side on October 24, 2016. He was 90. Mr. Treweek was born September 28, 1926 to Herbert and Ethel Treweek in Nesquehoning, PA.
Herb grew up in Pennsylvania and joined the Army at the end of World War II, at age 18. He served as a staff sergeant at the Headquarters of General Douglas McArthur in Tokyo, Japan in 1945. After military life he attended Rider University, and earned a degree in business administration. He went on to work for Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company where he met Shirley Yochum. The two were married in 1953 and raised two children, Tim and Debi. Herb and Shirley were married 59 years.
Herb was devoted to his family and was a tireless, dedicated insurance professional. After beginning his career at Nationwide he accepted a position with Safeco insurance company where he would rise to the position of national personal automobile underwriting manager in Seattle, WA. In 1971 he joined Cannon-Treweek agency, an independent insurance agency in Gainesville, FL and retired as its president in 1991. In 1981 he was elected Chairman of the Florida Association of Insurance Agents (FAIA), the most successful and effective association of insurance agents in the United States. Prior to becoming the chairman of FAIA, Herb contributed hundreds of hours in the development and presentation of education programs to FAIA members, earning their gratitude and respect. He served on the board of the ACORD corporation and other numerous insurance industry organizations.
In retirement Herb and Shirley travelled the globe together and helped found Celebration United Methodist Church of Gainesville. He was an avid fan of the Florida Gators and Pittsburgh Steelers. He enjoyed golf and built and extensive G-gauge train display that entertained and delighted hundreds of children and adults during many Christmas seasons.
He is survived by his son Timothy J. Treweek (Iris), daughter Devora Pendleton, and four grandchildren and four great grandchildren. His wife, Shirley, sisters Doris and Jane, and brother Bob preceded him in death.
Funeral Services will be held Saturday, November 5, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at Celebration United Methodist Church, 9501 SW Archer Road. For those who wish, memorials may be made to Haven Hospice 4200 NW 90th Blvd. Gainesville, FL 32606.
