Denham Clements
Herb was very much a self-made man, and was as much a dedicated professional as he was a dedicated friend, devoted husband and father. Meeting in high school in a previous century, I was blessed to rekindle that friendship in later years and the many heated political discussions we had lead us to mutually recognize that we'd better agree to disagree...our friendship was much more important. That decision sealed a bond between us that I will always treasure. His sudden death reminded me of the wisdom of poet William Cowper..."God seemed to have made him just what he was that he might be a blessing to others, and when the influence of his character and abilities began to be felt, removed him. These are mysteries we cannot contemplate without astonishment, but will nevertheless be explained hereafter and must, in the meantime, be revered in silence." I was honored to call him a great friend. He will always be remembered and missed.
