Helen Louise Garvin Smith's Obituary
Helen Louise Garvin Smith, 85, resident of Melrose, Florida, died Thursday, February 20, 2014 in the Shands Hospital at the University of Florida, following a long illness.
Mrs. Smith was born in Springfield, Illinois, on May 10, 1928 to the late John Henry and Marguerite Garvin. As a military wife, she traveled the world with her husband James C. “J. C.” Smith, to whom she was married for 56 years, prior to his death in 2013. Mrs. Smith worked as an accountant for the State of Florida, Department of H.R.S., until her retirement in 1991. She enjoyed cooking, sewing and gardening, but loved spending time with her grandchildren.
She is survived by her children, Marsi (Donny) Benson, of Gainesville, Rev. Doug (Janie) Cutts, of Norlina, N. C., Lisa Cutts, of Vero Beach, Charlene (Bruce) Williamson, of Melrose, and Bridget (Jim) Rountree, of Earleton; brothers and sisters, Delores Parton, Donald Garvin, Jerry Garvin, Mike Garvin, Linda Sion and Karen Hirstein. Ten grandchildren and eight great- grandchildren also survive.
Memorial services will be held on Monday, March 3, 2014 at 2:00 P. M., in the Eden Baptist Church, 2409 SE CR 219A, Hawthorne, with Rev. Jim Blevins, officiating. Interment will follow in Hawthorne Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of the Nature Coast, 6721 Crill Avenue, Palatka, FL 32177 or charity of your choice.
