Aunt Gloria always gave so much of herself to everyone, and with so much love and sincerity. Time spent with her in person or on the phone was so precious to me, and in every conversation, there would be a mixture of giggles (silly little things we'd both find funny) and tears (she would worry about me and any situation that I might be going through), and always genuine compassion and concern. It was never about her. It's rare to find someone who is so selfless, and who loved so completely—and who let you know just how much in so many thoughtful ways. She never forgot a birthday, or to let you know how beautiful she thought you were. Talking to her and being with her made me always feel safe and whole and special. And yes, she had this incredibly soft side, but Aunt Gloria was also one of the strongest women I've ever known. When life dealt her difficulties, she always faced them head on, never complaining, and just taking it all in stride. I admired that so much about her, and hope that I, too, can be just as resilient in challenging moments. Aunt Gloria, in her gentle kindness, made me feel connected to my mother (her sister), always sharing stories of their childhood and memories with "Mama" (my grandmother), which meant the world to me. It's hard to imagine life without her in it, but her beauty—inside and out—and loving spirit will keep her alive within me always.
