Gladys Theresa (Siegel) Sands' Obituary
Gladys Theresa (Siegel) Sands, 84, passed away peacefully at her daughter’s home in Gainesville, FL on the morning of July 6, 2017.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Lee Sands Jr, and parents Edward F. and Verna Lee (Mueller) Siegel. Gladys is survived by her daughter Cecile (Sam Saxon) of Gainesville, FL, son Walt of Farmington, AR, and grandchildren Robert Lee and Theresa Lynn Sands of Prairie Grove, AR.
Gladys was born in Louisville, KY on Christmas Day, 1932 and lived an interesting life, from playing field hockey in high school to becoming the curator of the Eureka Springs (AR) Historical Museum, from which she retired in 2001. In between, she worked for radio and TV stations in Louisville, KY, North Augusta, SC and Chicago, IL; was a housewife and mother; founded a neighborhood food co-op, and even worked on a landscaping crew. She was a wonderful cook and baker.
She was a proud graduate of Sacred Heart Academy in Louisville, KY and attended classes at Ursuline College, also in Louisville. Later in life she earned an associate’s degree in horticulture from Harper Community College in Palatine, IL. She loved playing Scrabble, blackjack and FreeCell, gardening, watching Kentucky basketball and researching Kentucky Derby horses on the computer. Gladys will be remembered for her smile and her sense of humor.
A funeral Mass will be held at St. Augustine Church and Catholic Student Center, 1738 W University Ave, Gainesville, FL on Thursday July 13, 2017 at 12 noon.
