Gladys "Bobbie" E. Hamilton Calton's Obituary
Gladys “Bobbie” E. Hamilton Calton
Gladys “Bobbie” Calton of Cross Creek, Florida, passed away on December 16, 2024, at the age of 100. She was born in Saskatchewan, Canada, to Mary M. Boyd and Henry N. Hamilton and grew up on a farm. After teaching in a one room schoolhouse for several years, Bobbie wanted to see new things and traveled with her family to Key West, Florida. She was working in a cafe there when she met and later married the love of her life, William “Bill” C. Calton. They were married 72 years before Bill passed on September 15, 2021.
Bobbie was a wonderful mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She supported Bill as a Navy wife and as his assistant with his photography business. She worked at Rawlings Elementary School in Gainesville, Florida, as a secretary and at the University of Florida Foundation in administrative and research roles. She was also a U.S. Census Collector and a poll worker for Alachua County Elections.
She had a full, active, and happy life, enjoying time with family and friends, sewing, square dancing, playing cards, board games, and traveling with Bill all over the United States and Canada in their motorhome. Bobbie kept a diary of their adventures, including turns, purchases, and the things they saw along the way.
Bobbie is survived by her three children, Nancy Cooper (Marion), Larry Calton, and Carla Connell (late husband, Chris); her seven grandchildren, Tracy George (Kade), Christy Nipper (Luke), April Hulbert (Blue), Shelley Rummel (Dusty), Lauren Castillo (Cory), Michael Connell, and Kristen Connell (Ben Oliver); and her ten great-grandchildren, Ryan George, Miles Nipper, Molly Nipper, Maggie Nipper, Sailor Hulbert, Reef Hulbert, Jilian Rummel, Jocelyn Rummel, Jake Rummel, and Mara Castillo. Survivors also include many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Bobbie is preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother Boyd Hamilton (Elsie) of Key West, Florida; sister Florence Kidney (Howard) of Tisdale, Saskatchewan; and sister Muriel Downs (Gene) of Chesapeake, Virginia.
A gathering will be held on February 11, 2025, from 1pm-3pm at Williams-Thomas Funeral Home at 404 North Main Street in Gainesville, Florida. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you donate to a charity of your choice in her name.
