Dr. Gina Giovinco passed into the arms of God on May 5, 2014. Beginning her career in the U.S. Public Health Service where she achieved the rank of Lieutenant Commander, Dr. Giovinco applied her education, skills and experience in nursing through professorships in the northeast, southeast and internationally. She moved to Gainesville in 1982 where she continued to teach nursing, bioethics and mental health. Dr. Giovinco was an International Fulbright Scholar at the University of Jordan, Amman, Jordan where she educated students at the Colleges of Medicine and Nursing. Having worked internationally with lay communities, professional organizations, service industries and academic institutions in achieving competencies in dealing with biomedical ethical issues and program development, she became known and highly respected for her work in combining logopsychology and ethics.
Dr. Giovinco was a modest and unassuming professional, never seeking credit for personal accomplishments, but content to work tirelessly behind the scenes laying the foundation for human rights through the building of successful programs and coalitions. She will be remembered by many throughout the world for her untiring work on Human Rights in South America, South Africa, Europe and the Middle East. Through a strong and passionate belief in the nature of humanity, Dr. Giovinco embraced the philosophy that when weariness, as a result of the enormity of the challenges that mankind endures, along with the recognition and acceptance of God’s blessings, can transport each person to become part of enterprises that may summon their innermost strengths to bring about moral, ethical and spiritual growth and wellbeing.
Among her volunteer activities, Dr. Giovinco served on many ethics boards and committees along with a number of community and professional boards locally, nationally, and internationally. She has profoundly touched and improved the lives of many people through not only by her commitment to high standards in nursing and education but also through her dedicated work throughout the world. As a member of Holy Faith Catholic Church, Dr. Giovinco volunteered her gifts in pastoral care and spiritual direction untiringly.
