Geraldine Elizabeth Edwards' Obituary
Geraldine (Betty) Moir Edwards passed away on Thursday, November 14, 2024, in the Gables of Palm Harbor Nursing Facility, following a long illness.
Betty was born in Traverse City, Michigan on May 30, 1918. She received her B. A. degree from Western Michigan University and her M. A. degree from the University of Michigan. She also attended Central Michigan University, Miami University of Ohio and the University of Florida.
Betty taught school for 28 years. She began teaching in Traverse City and Grand Rapids, Michigan. Her last 19 years were spent in St. Clair Shores, Michigan as a teacher and 12 years as a high school counselor at South Lake High School. In 1980, she was named Counselor of the Year for her school district.
She and her husband John lived in Grosse Pointe Woods, Michigan for 27 years before retiring to Gainesville, Florida in 1980. John taught and coached at Grosse Pointe North High School for 12 years.
When their son and daughter were growing up, the family visited 48 states and Canada. Later, John and Betty traveled to China, Japan, Russia, Hong Kong and Europe as well as Hawaii and Alaska. They enjoyed cruising in Alaska and the Caribbean. During their retirement years, John and Betty flew around the country in their Cessna 172.
Betty was a member of Emily’s List for Democratic Women, the American Association of University Women, the Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel and the Democratic National Committee.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband John of 61 years, and is survived by a daughter, Patricia Blankenship and her husband Joseph of Scottsdale, AZ, a son, John M. Edwards and his wife Debbie, of Dunedin, FL and three grandsons, Gregory Bauer of Hartford, CT, Alex (Kelly) Edwards of Woodstock, GA and Sean (Megan) Edwards, of Buford, GA; and by one Great-Great grandson, Elliott Edwards, of Woodstock, GA.
She will be buried at Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, Florida with her husband John
