Gerald William "Bill" Hammond's Obituary
Gerald William “Bill” Hammond was born on February 28, 1947, in Portland, Oregon, to Theron and Julia Hammond. Bill loved his parents dearly and always looked up to them, modeling his own deep commitment to family after the example they set. Raised in Eugene alongside his sister Gail, whom he adored, Bill was a man of purpose from a very young age. Following his 1965 graduation from South Eugene High School, Bill moved to Portland to begin his career and start his journey as a father.
In 1972, Bill found the teachings of meditation through Prem Rawat and began a lifelong practice. Through this, he found the fulfillment of peace within, recognizing every breath as a gift and his place on this magical planet as one of service and gratitude.
As a master carpenter, Bill left a lasting legacy through a career of historic preservation. Gainesville is more beautiful because of his hands; his talents helped restore and protect the character of the Historic Duckpond neighborhood, the Matheson History Museum, and the surrounding areas. Beyond his professional work, he was a pillar of his community, known variously as Dad, Daddy Sue, or Daddio to the many friends of his children who always found a home in his house.
A man of few words, Billy spoke through his actions: a warm meal, a bag of oranges passed along, or the best hug you’d have all day. He loved his quiet home by the lake, the annual return of the sandhill cranes, and the sight of redbuds and dogwoods in bloom. Most of all, he loved his family filling his home with laughter over his famous pot roast or a blue mug of Café Bustelo.
Bill is survived by his children: Nick Hammond, Kelly Hammond, Briana Ogden, Mary Hammond, Julia Hammond, and Linda Hammond Shillito (Rob). He is also survived by his grandchildren: Vanessa, Dalton, Michael Kamron, Kyle, Theron, Zebadiah, Gabriel, Marin, Alexander, and Ash; and his great-grandchildren, Avery and Madison. He rests in eternal peace, having taken care of his family, his town, and his spirit.
A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, May 2, at 3:00 PM at 6232 Centre Street, Melrose, FL 32666
