George Wilson McKinney's Obituary
George Wilson McKinney born April 7, 1939 to Lloyd P. and Johanna McKinney went home to be with the Lord on August 8th, 2014. He passed away at his home surrounded by his family and friends. He was a lifelong resident of Alachua County. He attended Gainesville High School until he had to quit school in the 10th grade to help support his family. He was a long time business man /entrepreneur in Gainesville. In 1964 he opened Gainesville Neon & Signs Inc. He was instrumental in designing, building, and installing numerous signs around the county. In 1982 he founded Exit Information Guide, Inc., an advertising company which sold advertising to hotels along the interstate highway system, he retired in 1999. He was a member of the Gainesville Masonic Lodge #41.
He is survived by his sister Mary Jo (Ralph) Brick and his 3 children, Donna Kay (Don) Gocek, Mark(Neila) McKinney, Laurie (Bobby) Wright ,8 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, the mother of his children Donna Lee McKinney along with many nieces, nephews and cousins. The family would like to thank the BEST caretakers at "My Helping Heart", (Mark Barry, Chip Stolbrand and Elaine Grant).
The family will receive friends Monday, August 11, 2014 from 6:00-7:30pm at WILLIAMS-THOMAS FUNERAL HOME WESTAREA 823 NW 143rd Street. Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, August 12, 2014 at 11:00am at Grace Baptist Church 7100 NW 39th Ave. with Pastor Jim Riley officiating. Interment will follow at Memorial Park Central, 4100 NW 39th Ave.
