George Edwin Brabham's Obituary
George Edwin Brabham, a proud veteran of the United States Army, passed away peacefully on June 23, 2024.
The son of Robert Reece and Christine Medlock Brabham, was born April 17, 1937 in Gainesville, FL and graduated from P.K. Yonge Developmental Research School in 1955.
In 1958, George enlisted in the Army and proudly served in the 52nd Medical Battalion unit. He was stationed in Fort Jackson, South Carolina and Germany. George was honorably discharged in 1962. He later served in the Navy Reserve.
After serving in the Army, he returned home and began a career with the United States Postal Service where he proudly worked for 27 years.
A man of many talents, he performed as comedian “Cousin Gabby” and played instruments including the banjo, harmonica, guitar and was a singer of Bluegrass and Gospel music. He enjoyed entertaining at the local chapter for Veterans of Foreign War and local events. He was also a member of the American Legion and performed there occasionally. George was a devout Baptist and loved being involved in the music ministry at his former church, Lake Forest Baptist Church. He was most recently an active member of Windsor Baptist Church.
George is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Betty Brabham, and their six children:
Janis Brabham English, George Martin (Marilia) Brabham, Teresa Brabham DiGloria, Charles (Mary) Brabham, Edwin Philip (Cathy) Cook, and Robert F. (Starr) Cook. He is also survived by his 14 grandchildren: Brandon and Rikki; Martin, Josh, Gabe and Christian; Anthony; Kathryn, Lauren and Madison; Travis and Victoria; Sarah and Fitz; and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Rev. John Brabham, Betty-Jo Hendry, Benny Brabham, and Reece Brabham.
The family will receive friends, Monday, July 1, 2024 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00pm at Williams-Thomas Funeral Home, 404 North Main Street. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 2, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at Windsor Baptist Church, 918 SE County Road 234, Gainesville, with Pastor Rick Cicio officiating. Interment will follow with military honors at Laurel Hill Cemetery, in Archer.
