Gene Nolan Yates' Obituary
Gene Nolan Yates, age 84 of Oviedo, passed away Friday, July 19, 2019 at his home. He was born February 2, 1935 in Jacksonville, Florida to John Dewey and Martha Mae Baker Yates. At the age of 17 years old, he was drafted into the Army serving as a tank driver in Korea and Japan for a span of four years. Upon returning to the states, he served another eight years with the Special Forces as an Airborne Ranger. Gene retired in 1995 after serving 26 years with Alachua County Sheriff’s Office as a Sgt. and head of the bomb squad. Upon retirement, he and his wife, Jackie, traveled the United States, fulfilling their bucket list of places that they wanted to see. He was a very loving and devoted husband and dad, always there to offer love and support. His family was always his top priority.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John Dewey Yates and Martha Mae Baker Yates (Jacksonville, Florida), sister, Evelyn Cochran (Houston, Texas), and brother, John Dewey Yates (Houston, Texas).
He is survived by his wife, Jacqueline Dawn Hawkins Yates; seven children, Carolyn Eddings, Angelina Summers, William H. Warrington, III (Donna), Michele DeJesus (Omar), Angela Smith, Suzanne Zelov (Peter), and Stephanie Warrington-Wright, ten grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren.
A Funeral Service will be held Saturday, July 27, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of WILLIAMS-THOMAS FUNERAL HOME WESTAREA, 823 NW 143rd Street, with Pastor Dan Webster officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday, July 26, 2019 from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
