Randy kept coming to mind when I was writing a letter to my current psychiatric practitioner. I kept thinking, “I need to touch base with him, write him a long overdue letter.” But, it’s been over thirty years since I’ve seen him and so, I decided to look him up and make sure that he was still practicing. With great sadness, I discovered he passed in 2020. Randy was my very first psychiatrist. Our relationship was tumultuous, intellectually stimulating, infuriating at times, but thought provoking. I had to leave the Gainesville area abruptly, but we continued corresponding for many years thereafter. We developed between us a unique, but cryptic type of correspondence which I have never encountered with anyone before or since. Our writings were almost riddles in prose, full of metaphoric references, poetry, and unique turns of phrases. In those writings he revealed to me a sharp mind and wit, complex humour, philosophical meanderings, and existential conflicts. In part, he inspired me to become a psychotherapist myself. He enriched my life in so many ways. I am and will always be honoured to know him.
