Frederick Owen "Scotty" Scott's Obituary
Frederick Owen “Scotty” Scott, 93, passed away peacefully in his sleep on October 31, 2015, at his home at The Village. He was born May 25, 1922, to Frederick Owen Scott and Jennie Read Scott, in Chicago, IL. Scotty attended Austin High School and Wright Junior College in Chicago, IL. Scotty was a veteran of World War II serving as a sergeant in the Army Air Corp from 1942 to 1945, as a B-17 airplane mechanic, drill and range instructor. He worked for AT&T, The Bell System with New York Telephone, transferred to Colorado Springs with Mountain Bell, and retired from AT&T Long Lines after 30 years of outstanding service. After retiring, he moved with his wife to Costa Rica for a short time and then to Florida for the remainder of his life. He owned and operated the Happy Hound Shop in Cross City, FL until the death of his first wife, Jean Scott, in 1986. Scotty moved to Gainesville in 1987 and married his second wife, Betty Godwin, in 1988. He worked as a realtor with Bosshardt Realty of Gainesville for 10 years. He and Betty were very active with the Telephone Pioneers and specifically with the “Hug-a-Bears” organization where they hand crafted many, many stuffed bears to be given to children by police and firemen around Gainesville. Scotty and Betty loved dancing, bingo, Wii bowling and traveling. Their trips to Europe and a cruise to Alaska were very special. His big adventure was surviving a direct hit from Hurricane Iniki in Kauai, Hawaii at his condominium. He took up golf late in life and it became his favorite sport. He was a huge Gator and Denver Bronco fan.
He is preceded in death by his first wife, Jean Ann McCarthy Scott, after 42 years of marriage. His second wife, Betty Beaver Godwin Scott, passed away on November 8, 2015, 8 days after his death, just short of 27 years of marriage. He is survived by his children, Sandy Scott, Sacramento, CA, Rick Scott, Bailey, CO, Bruce Scott (Monica), Huntington Beach, CA, Leslie Scott Handelman (Dr. Bill), Morris, CT, and Robin Scott Cunningham (Rob), Gainesville, FL; step daughters Terry Beauchamp, Gainesville, FL, and Paula Mekdeci (Richard), Virginia Beach, VA; brother-in-law, Thomas Beaver (Betty); 16 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by all that knew him for his kindness, generosity, and friendly manner in which he treated everyone he met.
The family wishes to thank Haven Hospice, especially Dr. Bichier, and nurses Rita and Gina, for their excellent care the last 14 months. They would also like to thank the staff at Rose Court and Ivey Lane at The Village for the special attention they provided to Scotty.
The family will hold a private memorial service at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, FL at a later date. Contributions can be made in his honor to Haven Hospice.
