Freddie
Freddie Wood was buried yesterday, and today I could sense the loss as I rode my bicycle around Evinston. He was a life-long resident of our town, a husband, father, grandfather and a friend to almost everyone he met.
Freddie was a farmer extraordinaire and sold his produce at the Wood and Swink store/Post Office in Evinston. I cherish the memories of past Saturday mornings spent visiting with him and other visitors while buying fresh picked greens, okra, egg plant, beans, okra, peas, beans and melons.
Freddie was also a story teller and historian He loved to invite friends and visitors at the store to “sit a spell” and chat while he answered their questions about events and the people of Evinston and nearby communities.
Knowing I was interested in local affairs, he would often call to tell me or remind me of upcoming get-togethers, or that he had just brought in his latest harvest of fresh fruit and vegetables.
We were complete strangers when we first met almost 40 years ago, but Freddie welcomed our family to the Evinston community. He was a kind and generous person, we couldn’t have found a better neighbor. We will miss him greatly.
