Everette Daugherty's Obituary
Everette Daugherty, 78, of Gainesville, FL, died on Tuesday, March 5, 2024. Everette was born on March 27, 1945 in Lakeland, FL to Neal and Oveda Daugherty.
He is survived by his wife, Ann (Dolly) of 36 years, three children, Annette Daugherty, James Daugherty (Josie), and Erika Railey (Tyson), five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and two sisters, Joyce Criswell and Maxine Wathrope. He is preceded in death by his parents, and siblings Lewis Daugherty, Walter Daugherty, Violet Thorpe, Vera Perry, Nettie Criswell, and Eilleen Manning.
Everette was gifted with a variety of skill sets that would benefit him and others through his life. He had a keen understanding of how automobiles function, construction of buildings, and was intrigued with electronics. His knowledge of how the mechanics of automobiles function allowed him to service family and friends vehicles over the years. His shared saying often to others was “take care of your vehicle and your vehicle will take care of you”.
His profession in earlier years was steel work building construction. He was later employed by the University of Florida where his tenure lasted for 32 years. His career there began with the Animal Resources Department where he constructed cages and provided other construction needs for the research of the department. Later, he moved to the Housing Department for student residents as a Maintenance Specialist where he maintained the building repairs until his retirement.
He held an Amateur Radio License through the Federal Communications Commission and enjoyed the interaction with those that shared the same interest.
For leisure, and when he could, Everette enjoyed fishing on the Waccasassa River any time the chance presented itself. And when the fish wouldn’t bite, he would always say a bad day fishing is better than a good day at work. His getaway place was traveling out of state to visit his children. He always looked forward to the Gator football season and would pause his activities to enjoy watching the games and staying up to date with the happenings.
He enjoyed the company of close friends and family. There was one friend that he developed a long-lasting relationship with – Steve Smith. A friend that he shared common interests and together they supported each other throughout their life. A friendship that lasted his lifetime.
The family will receive friends Thursday, March 14, 2024, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Williams-Thomas Funeral Home Downtown, 404 North Main Street.
