She was preceded in death by her parents, Ease Daniel and Alice Garner Hodge, her sisters Marcelle Floyd, Justine Schwartzbach, and Lucy Smith, brother Everette Hodge and husband Jesse Hammett.
Evelyn was a member of the 1945 Newberry High School graduating class and a lifelong member of Jonesville Baptist Church. She had a career in banking where she came to know people throughout the community and continued to stay in touch with many long after she retired in 1987.
Evelyn, affectionately referred to as “Grammy”, was the matriarch and glue that held our family together. Hardworking, hardheaded, and full of grit, she spent 98 incredible years on her same family land where she was born, lived, and loved. That land holds her footsteps, her stories, her hard work & her legacy and now, it holds our memories of her, too. She taught us the value of resilience, the power of family, and how to stand our ground with grace (and maybe just a little stubbornness). We’ll miss her Witt (pun intended), her wisdom, her strong work ethic & her amazing strength & even her stubbornness!
She enjoyed sewing, knitting, cross-stitching, crocheting and quilting. You could find her on the John Deere tractor putting out hay for the cows. She also mowed and maintained a beautiful yard. She was an excellent cook, serving many delicious meals. She grew both a spring and fall garden which she gladly shared with the family.
Goodbye, Grandma. You are a generational legend to all that has had the pleasure of being in your presence!! ❤️
You’ve more than earned your rest. We’ll carry your spirit with us always. You will never be forgotten!!
Rest easy, your work here is done. 😇
