Emily May Walker's Obituary
Emily May Hartley Walker, 93, passed away August 30, 2024.
Emily was born on December 8, 2024, Ashtabula County. She was the fifth of six children born to her parents, Frederick and Alice (Owens) Hartley in Williamsfield OH. She was a graduate of Williamsfield HS and a former employee of The Carlisle Allen Company in Ashtabula, OH. She married Maynard B. Walker in 1950. They enjoyed 61 years of marriage before his passing in 2011.
Together they were the parents of : Rebecca Carr, widow of Rev. David Carr of Gainesville FL, Diana Strawbridge (Charles) of Ashtabula, OH, Valerie Vanderlip of Louisville, KY, and Lisa Masselli of Clearwater, FL their grandchildren include Jason Carr (Crystal), John Carr (Melody) Stephen Carr (Amanda) Carr, Tim Strawbridge , Bryan Strawbridge, Carl Vanderlip, Cameron Vanderlip, Maxwell (Madison)Vanderlip, Bret Masselli and Alex Masselli, and eight great grandchildren .
She was adored by her great grandchildren, namely Seth, aged 21 Logan, Ethan, Liam, Gavin, Emma, Jack, and one year-old Lily Mei. Also left to cherish her memories are her sister-in-law, Roberta Loudenslager-Loewy, of Merritt Island, FL, brother-in-law, Dr. Edward and Barbara Walker, of Hubbard, OH many nieces and nephews, and her dear friend Mary Ekholm, of Jefferson, OH. She was a host mother to American Field Service exchange student Antonio Farroco Jr of Lisbon, Portugal. Both she and Maynard considered Tony the son they never had.
Emily was a member of Bethel Life Church in Greenville, PA.
She was an avid reader who also adored flowers, gardening, bird identification and feeding, animal rescue, writing letters and playing Scrabble. We remember our mother rescuing animals in all weather and situations. She took many cats and dogs to be neutered. Mom planted flowers in many places, sometimes in secret, to surprise friends and always in the graveyards of our loved ones. She made terrific strawberry jam and was a wonderful cook. She was a passionate pro-life supporter and defender and generously donated her time, talent, and treasure to many causes that touched her heart. She was a board member at Samaritan House for years. She sewed dresses for children in orphanages in Costa Rica and financially supported the Love a Child ministry in Haiti. She was a supporter of many well drilling projects for people in third world countries with limited water supply. She was also very involved in Native American ministries including health, welfare and education.
Emily was the last of her immediate family, predeceased by her husband, Maynard, her parents and her siblings, Marion Thomas, Robert Hartley, Thomas Hartley, Ruth (Hartley) Wason, and Dorothy (Hartley) Davis. She will be buried beside her husband, Maynard, at Edgewood Cemetery in Ashtabula, OH.
