Edith Weitzen's Obituary
Edith Weitzen, age 84 of Gainesville, passed away Sunday, July 17, 2016, with her loving family around her. She was born April 17, 1931 in Brooklyn, New York to Philip and Ida Bossman Berman. Edie grew up on Coney Island surrounded by her Jewish, Russian immigrant family. She loved to laugh and make people laugh.
A natural beauty inside and out, she went to Brooklyn College on scholarship and became a public educator. While walking around campus, a pageant organizer asked her to be in the most beautiful girl on campus contest. Edith was loving, kind and generous, making those she was with feel good to be around her. She was a great listener, empathetic, caring and sensitive.
Edith lived a great life. She met her first choice, her husband Shelly when she was 21. They spent 50 years together. They moved to Gainesville in 1971, were active in the community and made many dear friends.
Edith was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Sheldon Weitzen and brother, Sol Berman. She is survived by her children, Andrew Weitzen, Dr. Janet Brownstein (Stephen) and Randi Faris (James) and four grandchildren, Sara and Joshua Brownstein and Josephine and Maxine Faris.
Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, July 19, 2016 at 11:00 a.m., at Congregation B’nai Israel with Rabbi David Kaiman officiating. Interment will follow in B’nai Israel Cemetery, corner of East University and Waldo Roads. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make memorials to Congregation B’nai Israel, 3830 NW 16th Blvd, Gainesville, FL 32605.
