Dr. Gilbert Daniel's Obituary
With gratitude for a life deeply rooted in faith, service, and devotion, we remember Dr. Gilbert Daniel, who joined our Lord on February 15, 2026, peacefully at home, surrounded by his beloved wife and family.
Gilbert was born on July 8, 1944, in the humble village of Semmandalam in Cuddalore, India, to Lilly and Charles Daniel. Born under a simple thatched roof, he was the eldest of five brothers and one sister. From a young age, he embraced responsibility not as a burden, but as a calling. Guided by unwavering faith, he believed that devotion to God, honoring one’s parents, and diligent work were sacred duties. In pursuit of opportunity, he immigrated to the US and faithfully sponsored each of his brothers to join him and settling his sister. He was steadfast and generous in supporting both his family in India and the one he was building in America. His sacrifices were acts of gratitude to God and profound love for those entrusted to his care. Through his unyielding commitment, generations of the Daniel family have flourished.
Gilbert’s academic excellence earned him acceptance to Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital in Chennai, an honor reserved for those achieving the highest national scores. For a young man raised with meager means, this achievement was both privilege and a responsibility he did not take lightly. After graduation he served in rural Indian villages caring for patients that had very little. During these formative years, he forged friendships that endured throughout his life—brothers in both medicine and faith who stood beside him in his most difficult seasons.
On September 4, 1970, Gilbert married Sara Priya in a union arranged by their families but blessed and deepened through shared faith and devotion. Over time, their marriage blossomed into a profound partnership. Gilbert often said that if his heart were broken into pieces, each one would bear Priya’s name. Together, they built a life anchored in Christ and sustained by prayer.
When their first child Rebecca was born, Gilbert was determined to provide more opportunities for his growing family, and he pursued further training in the United Kingdom from 1972 to 1976. During this time, their son Jonathan was born. In 1976, Gilbert moved to the US when accepted into the internship at Harper Grace Hospital/Wayne State University and went on to complete his residency in Diagnostic Radiology at Sinai Hospital of Detroit.
Gilbert’s life was not without trial. In his late thirties in Detroit, he underwent his first quadruple bypass surgery, followed by a second cardiac surgery fourteen years later. Yet even in illness, he did not question God’s purpose. He sought only guidance and the grace to live faithfully as a servant of Christ. Even in the face of his recent cancer illness his bold trust in God’s sovereignty was a testimony to all who knew him.
In 1979, Gilbert accepted what he believed to be a divine calling: serving as the Radiologist at Portage Health System in Hancock, Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Though greeted by towering banks of snow, in this rural hospital without equipment, he saw an opportunity to serve. Over two decades, driving between Hancock, Calumet and Baraga Hospitals, he helped the hospital establish, ultrasound services, angiography, nuclear medicine, mammography, an in-house CT scanner, and mobile MRI services—bringing advanced medical care to an underserved community.
Gilbert and Priya raised their family in steadfast faith at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, attending every Sunday and serving faithfully. The hospital stood beside the church, and it was not uncommon for Gilbert to bring his children to the radiology department after worship to entice his children to his profession while also spend time memorizing verses while he would work. Faith and vocation were never separate in his life; both were offerings of his faith.
Gilbert and Sara Priya’s home was always a place of welcome. Students, colleagues, neighbors, and friends frequently gathered for a buffet of delicious food. Gilbert would help prepare the meats for cooking and enjoyed his expertise in identifying and cleaning the freshest of fish. Gilbert encouraged young students to pursue knowledge, integrity, and devotion. He was always curious about their plans and encouraged them to have ambition. Hospitality was not merely kindness—it was his ministry.
As empty nesters, Gilbert spent his time in photography and rose gardening with a deep love of nature. He retired from his full-time position in Michigan and pursued locum positions across the country—serving communities from Michigan to Arizona, Montana, New Mexico, Indiana, and Florida—with Priya faithfully by his side. Eventually, a permanent position at the VA in Gainesville led them to settle there, where they joined University Lutheran and found their spiritual home as devoted members of Abiding Savior Lutheran Church in Gainesville.
Together, Gilbert and Priya traveled to more than 35 countries and 40 states, marveling at the beauty of God’s creation by plane, train, boat, and automobile, a nod to their shared love of adventure. Due to the trials they had faced together, each journey was an act of gratitude for the life they had been given.
Gilbert’s greatest joys were his faith in Christ, his beloved Sara Priya, his family, and his lifelong intellectual curiosity. His children, grandchildren and great grandchildren will be his legacy that lives on in them and in the many lives he touched through healing hands, wise counsel, generous hospitality, and unwavering devotion.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to Abiding Savior Lutheran Church in Gainesville, Florida, Give | Abiding Savior Lutheran Church and School, in support of its mission to share the hope and goodness of Jesus Christ with the community. We welcome friends, family and colleagues of Gilbert to attend his service on February 22, 2026 at 3pm at Abiding Savior Lutheran Church 9700 W Newberry Rd, Gainesville, FL32606
