Curtis Edward Von Gunten's Obituary
Curtis Edward Von Gunten, 68, passed away on August 30th, 2017 at his home surrounded by his loving family in Gainesville, Florida. He was born on November 27th, 1948 in Akron, Ohio to Coburn and Portia Safreed Von Gunten.
Curtis grew up in Bath, Ohio. He graduated from Revere High School in Richfield, OH in 1966. After high school he joined the Navy in 1967 and served for 5 years as a Hospital Corpsman and a Nuclear Medicine Technologist. He was honorably discharged in 1974, achieving the rank of Petty Officer Second Class. He then attended The University of Florida in Gainesville, FL where he received a bachelors degree in Health Science in 1979, and later began working for Shands at UF as a Cardiovascular Technician where he worked for 7 years, followed by Cardiovascular Sales for Cordis Corporation, Telectronics and St. Jude Medical, specializing in cardiac pacemakers and implantable cardioverter defibrillators for 25 years. He retired in 2008.
Curtis married Cheryl Hardman Von Gunten in 1970 in Fairlawn, OH. They were happily married for 47 years. He enjoyed fishing, riding his motorcycles and spending time with his seven grandchildren.
Curtis was preceded in death by his father, Coburn Von Gunten and mother, Portia Safreed Von Gunten.
Curtis is survived by his spouse Cheryl of Gainesville, Florida; his daughters Leslee Von Gunten, Laura McTureous, Elizabeth (Robert) Brothers and son Curtis (Nadia) Von Gunten, II, all of Gainesville, Florida; his brother Charles (Kathy) Von Gunten of Palmer, Alaska; his grandchildren Jackson, Jazmine, Xavier, Logan, Erik, Jaylee and Emily; his nieces, nephews and other relatives.
A visitation will be held at Williams Thomas Funeral Home Westarea, 823 NW 143rd Street, Newberry, FL 32669, from 5:00 – 7:00pm on Thursday, September 7th, 2017, where the family will be greeting friends and relatives. Burial will be a private family ceremony at Memorial Park Central, Gainesville, Florida.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 22478, Oklahoma City, OK 73123.
