Sorry to hear bout Prof. Hays's passing. Dr. Hays was my advisor for my Master's thesis circa 1993-1994.
He took a chance on me by letting me join the Structural Engineering department from the Coastal Engineering Department and providing me with a teaching assistantship to help support me.
He was an exceptionally gifted teacher and advisor. I learnt to understand structural analysis and structural dynamics in a very deep way through classes he taught and all my interactions with him writing my thesis. He inspired me to go ahead and get a Ph.D. at The University of Texas Austin as well.
I currently work for Waymo on mechanical design and analysis of sensors for driverless cars still using the principles he helped me master over 30 years ago and his advice has always stayed with me: you need to remember just a couple of things to be a good structural engineer, you can't push on a string and you get paid every other Friday!
