Cleo "Nanny" Nelson Sloan's Obituary
Cleo “Nanny” Nelson Sloan gained her eternal inheritance in heaven just before dawn on Sunday, February 24, 2019 from the Haven Hospice Care Center in Gainesville, FL. She lived a wonderful 98 years and 5 months. She was born in Hontubby, OK to Addie Catherine Plummer and Edgar Edward Manning. She accepted Jesus as her savior at age 16 at a “Camp” meeting in Bonanza, Arkansas and was baptized in a river – a story she loved to tell. She was married to Byron “Red” Nelson for 24 years and to Herbert Sloan for 13 years.
Cleo called Miami, Florida home for 60 years where she attended Central Baptist Church. Cleo held many jobs throughout the years, including a cook at the Sears and Roebuck Snack Bar and a safety deposit box clerk for Florida Federal. In 2011, she moved out of Miami and split her time between her daughters Sylvia in Dacula, GA and Robin in Spartanburg, SC.
Cleo’s most admirable trait was her extraordinary will and ability to put up a fight. But her greatest gift is her legacy of prayer. Cleo was an avid, persistent and reliable prayer warrior. She consistently prayed for all the Southern Baptist Missionaries by name on their birthdays up until the day she took them to Jesus in person. If you wanted to be sure your request was being carried to the throne of God, put it on Cleo’s prayer list.
She loved her family, her coffee hot, and watching Wheel of Fortune and sports. Her greatest desire was to be with Jesus.
She is survived by her two daughters and their husbands, Sylvia and Gary Barteaux of Dacula, GA and Robin and Cassidy Carlile of Newberry, FL.; her five adoring grandchildren and their spouses, Ruth and Chris Mullen of Lawrenceville, GA; Byron and Jennifer Barteaux of Gray, GA; Ben and Amanda Barteaux of Dacula, GA; Ric and Kathy Carlile of Spring, TX; and Caitlyn and Drew Boland of Arlington, MA. She is also survived by 6 great grandchildren: Kayla, Timmy and Maddie Mullen; Skylar Barteaux; Cayden Carlile and Jacob Barteaux. Cleo also shares the riches of our Lord in eternity with her great granddaughter Natalie Barteaux.
A Memorial service will be held Saturday, March 9th at 11:00 AM at Hebron Baptist Church, 202 Hebron Church Rd, Dacula, GA, 30019. The family requests that blue be worn in honor of Cleo as this was her favorite color.
