Charles Eugene Smith's Obituary
Charles Eugene Smith, known to his friends and family as Gene (Pops), passed away on April 15, 2025, at the age of 96 at Big Bend Hospice in Tallahassee, Florida.
Gene was a devoted servant of the Lord whose faith was evident in every aspect of his life. His legacy is defined by his deep love for people, his unwavering commitment to his church, and his lifelong dedication to service. Over the years, Gene served in many capacities at his church, including bus ministry, benevolence committee, nursing home ministry, various outreach programs, witnessing and visitation programs, and as a Sunday School teacher. He was a dedicated supporter of Outreach for Christ and never hesitated to share the gospel wherever he went.
Gene was a proud U.S. Army veteran, serving for 20 years retiring in 1968, and later retired after 20 years with the U.S. Postal Service in 1989. His work ethic, combined with his genuine kindness, left a lasting impact on all who knew him.
Known for his ability to make friends wherever he went, Gene never met a stranger. As one friend aptly put it, “If you got on an elevator at the 10th floor with him, perhaps, by the time you reached the first floor, you would have heard the gospel.”
Gene is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Dixie Smith. He is survived by his, dedicated and loving son, Brian Smith and his wife, Gina Bliss Smith.
A funeral service will be held on May 1, 2025, at 1:00 PM at London Bridge Baptist Church in Virginia Beach, VA. Graveside service following at 3:00 PM, Woodlawn Cemetery, Norfolk, VA.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Outreach for Christ in Gene’s honor. (OFC, PO Box 4326, Va. Beach, VA 23454-0326)
