Carolyn and my went to Gordon St., Presbyterian church in the West End of Atlanta. We were predestined to be best friends. In Sunday school we always asked questions we were not supposed to ask such as who did Adam and Eve's sons marry? And why did the Bible say to "suffer the little children?" During worship when we were preteens, we sat in the balcony, made spitballs out of the bulletin, and dropped them on the heads of the bald elders coming down the aisle below. As teenagers we alternated being president and vice president of the MYF. We got into trouble by inviting Mormon missionaries to come do a program in the church.
At Southwest High School we sat together in the back of the class, especially in all math and science classes, because the boys, going to Georgia Tech, sat in front. I always sat behind Carolyn in our favorite English classes watching her twirl her hair at the back of her neck. For Latin we had stern Mrs. Mildred Wright who also went to our church. Our boyfriends were also best friends. At dances Carolyn and I talked to each other instead of to our escorts. I think we worked together on the school annual.
I moved with Sid Schell to California for 30 years, but at our fiftieth high school reunion , we looked just the same. My hair was brown and hers was red and we were beautiful and slim. Carolyn was still my witty and optimistic friend. Somewhere her spirit is whispering to a bossy person "Well don't cha think doing it this way might be better."
