Carol Austin Crevasse's Obituary
It is with much sadness that we announce the passing of Carol Austin Crevasse. Carol, age 92, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 17, 2021, at Oak Hammock at the University of Florida. She was a devoted wife, a cherished mother and a loving Meme to all her grandchildren. We are thankful for all the years of loving care from the staff at Oak Hammock, Royal Care of Central Florida and Haven Hospice.
Born and raised in Chattanooga, TN to Faye Eskew and Robert Roy Austin. Carol attended Duke University where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority and received a degree in education. It was at Duke where she met her husband of 50 years, Lamar Earl Crevasse. The growing Crevasse family moved from Durham to New York City to Atlanta, finally settling in Gainesville, FL. In 1958, Dr. Crevasse accepted a position as the first Chief Resident and instructor at the University of Florida’s College of Medicine.
For Carol, life in Gainesville was exciting and wonderful – rich with family, friends, travel, service work and volunteer commitments. Carol was active in the Medical Guild of Shands Hospital, a board member of the Florida Museum of Natural History, she was a sustaining member of the Gainesville Junior League, and held membership in the Daylily Garden Club, Gainesville Woman’s Club, Gainesville Golf and Country Club and the Joe Canter social club. Also, a lifetime member of The First Presbyterian Church of Gainesville. Carol was an avid tennis, golf and bridge player belonging to many clubs.
The young Crevasse family lived for several years in the Netherlands and traveled extensively in the Middle East. With a wanderlust that was never suppressed, Carol and Lamar Crevasse cruised, flew, sailed and camel-rode their way through all 7 continents bringing back artifacts from every corner of the earth.
Carol’s civic legacy in the Gainesville and Alachua County area will always stand out as representative of who she really was – generous, caring person deeply respectful of nature and a forward-thinking preservationist. The Florida Museum of Natural History and Prairie Creek Ranch are just two of the outstanding examples of the work she participated in to ensure future generations enjoyed the experiences.
In 1979, Carol lived out her life-long dream of having a place near the beach. She purchased a home at the new Amelia Island Plantation. The Shipwatch villa became her home away from home where she loved hosting family and friends. While there, Carol played tennis, golf, sunbathed, and enjoyed long beach walks.
Carol leaves behind a sadden family. Our condolences also go out to her large group of friends. Surviving children are Jonathan Lamar (Barbara) and Candice Crevasse Scott (Dana). Grandchildren include Jonathan Lamar Crevasse of Tampa, FL, Lindsey Nikkels Ahearn of Cary, NC, Stuart Scott (Madeline) of Marietta, GA and Alyse Taylor Scott of Dallas, TX. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lamar Earl (2001) and son, Arthur Austin (2013).
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the Florida Natural History Museum 3215 Hull Road, Gainesville, FL 32611 https://www.floridamuseum.ufl.edu/ in the name of Carol A. Crevasse and family. Private interment services will be held in the very near future.
