Carl Richard Scully's Obituary
Carl R. (Dick) Scully, age 80, passed away September 7, 2018 at Harbor Chase in Gainesville. He was born November 2, 1937, in Fairmont, West Virginia, to Richard and Evelyn West Scully. In 1955 he graduated from East Fairmont High School where he was the manager of the football and basketball teams. After a year in college and service in the U.S. Army he moved to Daytona Beach, Florida. While there he had various jobs, one of which was disc jockey for station WSBB. He married his first wife, Jeanne Powell, and they had two sons.
When he and his wife separated, Dick moved to Gainesville to help a friend open several convenience stores. In 1976 he joined the Alachua County Sheriff's Office, and after training he was employed as deputy sheriff in the ASO from 1976 until 2005. Most of his career was in forensics, and he served there for twenty-eight years. During his years at ASO he also earned a college degree at the University of Florida.
He was an active member of Westside Baptist Church and served as usher for several years. Also, he was a member of the Energizers Sunday School Class. For many years he was in the Flying Gators Model Airplane Club, where he was secretary for three years.
Dick is survived by Ruth, his wife of 17 years; his son, Richard of Fellsmere, FL; his son, Dennis (Michelle) and grandchildren, Julia and Aidan of Deland, FL; his sister, Mary Lou King, nephew Bryan King and great niece, Morgan King all of Ona, WV.
A Celebration of life will be held, Saturday, September 22, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at Westside Baptist Church with Dr. David Chauncey officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, beginning at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Haven Hospice, 4200 NW 90th Boulevard, Gainesville, FL 32606 or Westside Baptist Church, 10000 West Newberry Road, Gainesville, FL 32606.
