Bobby Lee Scurlock's Obituary
Bobby Lee Scurlock (“Dr. Bob”), Ed.D., M.A., B.A, 81, originally from Miami, Florida, passed away peacefully in his sleep on November 5, 2016, at the Haven Hospice E.T. York Care Center in Gainesville, Florida.
A private funeral service will be held at Miami Memorial Park on November 12, 2016.
Dr. Scurlock graduated from Miami Edison Senior High School in 1953; he was selected to the All-City baseball team in his senior year. Upon graduating from Edison, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. After boot camp at Parris Island, South Carolina, he served in Japan for the rest of his enlistment period, and he was honorably discharged in 1956. He then attended North Greenville College, where he played baseball for the Mounties; he also played minor league baseball in the Western Carolina League. He later transferred to Stetson University, and in 1961 he earned a Bachelor of Arts in religion with a minor in education. He earned a Master of Religious Education from the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary in 1964. He then went on to earn a Doctor of Education from the University of Miami in 1984, where he made valuable contributions to the education community with his doctoral research on the effectiveness of computer-assisted mathematics instruction for children.
Dr. Scurlock touched thousands of lives in the South Florida area with his passion for music both in the classroom and as the director of countless choral ensembles. For more than 30 years, he was employed by both public and private schools, teaching mathematics, computer literacy, computer programming, and of course music. He retired from the Miami-Dade County public school system in 1997, yet remained active over the subsequent decade teaching and inspiring the next generation of young educators at Miami Dade College, Florida International University, and Barry University. He also traveled the world during this time, visiting Ireland, England, France, Italy, Switzerland, and Greece.
Throughout his life, Dr. Scurlock served in various positions in Baptist churches such as Pastor, Minister of Youth and Education, and Minister of Music and Youth. He is the author of “The Passage: From Death to Life,” a book about near-death experiences. He lived his final years close to his family in Gainesville, Florida.
Dr. Scurlock is survived by his two children, Teresa L. Hall and Bobby J. Scurlock, Ph.D., his son-in-law Guy Hall, daughter-in-law Belinda Scurlock, grandchildren Aaron Hall, Matthew Hall, Sarah Hall, Rachel Hall, Ethan Hall, and Emilia Scurlock, as well as great-grandchildren Jack Hall, Miles Hall, Silas Hall, and Peter Portwine.
