Benjamin Barger's Obituary
Benjamin Barger, 94, of Gainesville, passed away Wednesday, July 1, 2015. He was born October 26, 1920 in Bolenge, Africa to Gervase James Patterson Barger and Myrtle Grace King Barger. Benjamin was a World War II veteran, as he had proudly served his country in the US Army. He later graduated from George Washington University, and Duke with a PHD. He was a Clinical Psychologist at the University of Florida from 1959 to 1985, and the Director of Student Mental Health at the Infirmary. He was the past president of the Ohio Psychological Association. Benjamin was a long time member of Trinity United Methodist Church, and sang in the choir. He was an artist, ushered at The Performing Arts Center for over 20 years, and volunteered for many years at Alachua General Hospital.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn Barger; daughter, Karen Hunter; two sisters, Wenona Diggle and Erva Zuckerman; and brother, Rex Barger. He is survived by his two children, Lynn D'Louhy of Gainesville/Ormond Beach, and Janette (Jan) Barger Bledsoe of Longwood; his grandchildren, Jennifer Bouch, Lara Cato, Lisa Tweedy, Ben Bledsoe, David D’Louhy, Brittany Hunter, and Pope and Brian Hunter; and fourteen great grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life service will be held Friday, August 7, 2015 at 3:00 p.m. in the sanctuary of Trinity United Methodist Church, with Dr. Dan Johnson officiating.. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials made to Trinity United Methodist Church, 4000 NW 53rd Ave, Gainesville, FL 32653, for mission projects.
