Captain Arthur W. Gove's Obituary
Captain Arthur W. Gove, Retired, passed away Saturday, October 13, 2018 at Oak Hammock at the University of Florida at age 94. Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, he was stationed in St. Ignace, Michigan, Governors Island, New York, and Toledo, Ohio before retiring to Ramsey, New Jersey. He has resided in Florida since 1991. He started his marine career as an 18 year old USNR Midshipman at the New York State Maritime Academy at Fort Schuyler, New York, graduating early in 1944. During World War II, he participated as an Officer in the Merchant Marine in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Mediterranean Sea War theatres. He continued further after the war until 1957 when he was commissioned in the US Coast Guard, reaching the rank of Captain, with marine safety as his primary duties. In 1968, he served a tour in the Vietnam War supporting the US Navy. He had married Marjorie Andrews in 1953 and had four children in 47 years of marriage. Marjorie passed away in 2001. Retiring from the Coast Guard in 1977, he resumed his Merchant Marine career as Master of the US Flag Tankers for 10 years. After many years of biking in the US and Europe, he married Patricia Liston in 2006.
He is survived by Patricia and two of his children, Scott and Audrey.
Graveside funeral services with full military honors will be held on Wednesday, October 17, 2018, at 11:00 A. M., in the Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, Florida. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to Salvation Army, 639 E. University Ave, Gainesville, FL 32601.
