Arnold Penland passed peacefully into the glorious life eternal on Saturday, May 23 after many months of illness. He was born in Asheville, N. C. on October 8, 1933, the son of Arnold Penland, Sr. and Pearl Bailey Penland. His you Read Obituary
Arnold was the most caring professor I ever met while studying for my PhD at UF. Very supportive in every way. Almost considered me like his son. We sang together at the First Pres Choir for many years as well. I miss him so much. Rest in peace Arnold.

Arnold and I were students at Western Carolina College. I recall with great joy our fun and friendship there. After graduation we keep in touch with visits and letters. However, as we traveled our different paths, our visits and communications became less frequent. Even though distance separated us, I still considered Arnold as one of my best friends who changed my life. There is now a hole in my heart, and I will miss him. My sincere sympathies are extended to Joan, Marcia, Beth and their families.

I remember what a handsome and beautiful couple Joan and Arnold made when they married. Over the years and countless reunions, Arnold was always willing to sing in that glorious voice of his making even more wonderful memories. What an amazing life he and Joan had - two beautiful daughters and four grandchildren. He will always be remembered for making the world a brighter place. Much love to all
I was a student in the glee club at Reidsville (North Carolina) High School, Arnold's first position upon finishing his degree at Western Carolina. He took an interest and coached me in voice lessons at no expense and even drove me with his fiancee in a '46 Nash to Duke University in a snowstorm where I won a superior certificate in the state's high school vocal competition for that year, and he was influential in getting a scholarship so that I could attend a summer music camp for high school students at Western Carolina College. Truly he took an interest in his students and went the extra mile for them and was generous and cheerful in so doing. I count it my good fortune to have had him as a mentor during my high school years. My condolences go to all of Arnold's family, loved ones, colleagues, and friends.
