Arline Greer's Obituary
Mrs. Arline Greer, 87, of Gainesville, Florida died Monday, September 19, 2016 following a brief illness.
Mrs. Greer wrote a weekly column for the Gainesville Sun from 1973 -1988 and was the critic-at-large for Gainesville’s local theater groups. A compilation of her articles was published in her book “Lovingly” in 2011. She was a faithful subscriber to both the Gainesville Sun and New York Times and would read both periodicals cover to cover.
Mrs. Greer’s greatest joy was her family. She was married to Dr. Melvin Greer for 58 ½ years. The Greer’s moved to Gainesville in 1960 with Dr. Greer’s joint appointment as an assistant professor of pediatric neurology and medicine. Together, they attended music festivals and theater openings and traveled extensively.
Mrs. Greer is survived by her sons, Jonathan M. Greer (Shelley Plumb) of Boynton Beach, FL, Richard A. Greer of Ormond Beach, FL and David M. Greer (Stephanie Kwei) of Guilford, CT; one daughter, Alison E. Cohen of Weston, FL; one brother Alan Ebert of New York, NY; eleven grandchildren, Rachel, Mikala and Jacob Cohen; Sarah, Matthew, and Micah Greer; Juliana, Isabel and Alexander Greer; Celia and Samuel Greer; two nephews, Stuart Scheer of New York, NY and Clifford Scheer of Charlotte, NC; and former daughter-in-law, Jennifer L. Greer of Gainesville, FL.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, September 22 at 11:00 a.m. at Congregation B’nai Israel, 3830 NW 16th Blvd., Gainesville, with Rabbi David Kaiman officiating. Interment will follow in B’nai Israel Cemetery. WILLIAMS-THOMAS FUNERAL HOME DOWNTOWN, 404 North Main Street, Gainesville is in charge of all arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations should be made to B’nai Israel in her honor.
